In a Sentence: Who is Boodabim?
What is it About: This book is such a sweet little tease! It’s a guessing game for the little ones, the really little ones, to identify who Boodabim is from the endearing disguises he appears in!
What makes it snuggly: The cute Boodabim. His name. His look. His roly-poliness. His mischievousness. The minimal text is playful, just the way a guessing game ought to be. But it’s a book where the child will be able to identify the animal right at the beginning. So the trick is in being able to sustain a child’s interest while still keeping the what-comes-next suspense alive. Watch her gurgle with delight at the turn of each page as Boodabim changes avtaars!
What Stands Out: The simplicity of Alankrita’s storytelling. And her neat frames which manage to tell so many stories other than the story on the page. My favourite frame is the cloud-Boodabim. Whoever suggested grey stood for DULL should see this page.
Will be best enjoyed by: Years 0-100. I can’t think of anyone whose heart won’t go plop like a melting icecream upon seeing the darling Boodabim.
From snuggly to snugglier: The child could draw Boodabim in more forms than in which he appears here. But to tell you honestly, this book doesn’t need any of it. Just allow the little one to enjoy the book, page after page (I wish this were a 32-pager; it gets over too soon) and see the delight in her eyes! My daughter is 7+ now, but you’ve got to see the way she goes completely defenceless the moment she spots Boodabim lying around in the house somewhere. And we both go, ‘It’s Booooooooodabim!’ 🙂
